What is Losec?

Losec is a generic name for Omeprazole compound and is a drug used to treat conditions that arise out of excessive acid buildup in the stomach. It is also used to treat cases of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Losec is available in generic versions and can be availed without prescriptions. It comes under the category of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) and helps decrease the secretion of acids in the stomach.

It is available through online medical prescriptions and can be subscribed for with a reputed local online pharmacist. Generic Losec is covered under medical insurance and most Medicare plans. Inexpensive to buy, Losec can also be cheaper online or in some pharmacies. Losec is also available under the names of PriLosec, Omeprazole, Zegerid OTC, and Prilosec OTC.

 

What is Losec used for?

Losec is used to treat cases and symptoms of stomach ulcers, GERD, and erosive esophagitis (damage that is caused to the esophagus due to excessive stomach acid). Losec may also be prescribed by doctors to treat cases of Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) bacterial infection in the stomach that causes severe gastrointestinal ulcers.

While heartburn is a side effect of ulcers and acid reflux in the stomach, heartburn may be due to an onset of a coronary attack. Who can take Losec?

Children and Adults can take Losec for GERD, acid reflux, stomach ulcers, gastric ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and pathological hypersecretory conditions (a condition where there is excessive unexplained secretion of acids in the stomach). Pregnant women and people over the ages of 50 years should take Losec only after consulting the doctor or physician.

People with allergies to certain foods, dyes, animal allergies, or allergies to preservatives should consult a doctor before consuming Losec or speak to the pharmacist for proper information. Mention any medications you are currently on, dosages, the frequency of use, and how long it has been since you are using the drugs. These factors will help determine whether you can take Losec and in what dosage.

Losec and other drugs containing Omeprazole are not recommended for infants under 2 months of age. However, studies have indicated that there are no adverse effects reported for children taking Losec between the ages of 1 – 16 years.

What are the side effects of Losec?

There are minimal side effects of Losec. Beware of side effects in children and report them to the doctor immediately.

Some of the important side effects of Losec could be muscle pain, cramps (leg cramps), nervousness, weakness in the body, and abnormal heart rate. If you experience any of these symptoms, please consult a physician immediately.

Losec, like almost all Proton Pump Inhibitors, is usually well tolerated. However, you could experience symptoms like dizziness, rash, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and unexplained headaches. These are the common symptoms of acid reflux, and since Losec is a medication to cure these symptoms, initial problems could arise. However, if these symptoms persist even after 2 – 3 days’ usage of Losec, please stop the medication and contact your physician immediately.

 

How does Losec work?

Losec helps control the enzyme that secretes excessive acid in the stomach. If left unchecked, there could be severe acid reflux problem and the excessive acid could erode the stomach lining, damage the esophageal valve (valve at the end of the food pipe), and cause swelling in the esophagus. Losec helps control this excessive acid secretion.

 

Losec Dosages:

Since Losec is available Over-the-Counter, please follow the medicine packet instructions carefully. Losec should be consumed one hour before your meal and should be taken according to instruction. Ideal dosage is for 14 days – once a day. Please wait 4 months before restarting the Losec cycle of 14 days. Do not crush, chew or dissolve the tablet. It is an oral tablet that has to be taken with water.
